UPSC Civil Services Exam 2025 – Complete Syllabus & Guide

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the toughest and most prestigious exams in India. It recruits officers for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and other central services. Here's a complete breakdown of the syllabus and pattern for all three stages.

📘 Exam Stages

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims) – Objective Type
  2. Main Examination (Mains) – Descriptive/Written
  3. Personality Test (Interview)

📝 Stage 1: UPSC Prelims Syllabus

📍 Paper I: General Studies (200 marks)

  • Current Affairs – National & International
  • History of India & Indian National Movement
  • Indian Polity and Governance
  • Economic & Social Development
  • Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, Climate Change
  • General Science
  • Geography – India and the World

📍 Paper II: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test – 200 marks)

Qualifying paper – need only 33% to pass

  • Comprehension & Communication
  • Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability
  • Basic Numeracy (up to Class X)
  • Decision-making and Problem-solving
  • Data Interpretation

📚 Stage 2: UPSC Mains Syllabus

Total of 9 Papers, out of which 7 are counted for merit.

📌 Qualifying Papers:

  • Paper A: Indian Language – 300 marks
  • Paper B: English – 300 marks

📌 Papers Counted for Merit (Total: 1750 Marks):

  • Paper I: Essay – 250 marks
  • Paper II: GS I (History, Geography, Society) – 250 marks
  • Paper III: GS II (Polity, Governance, IR) – 250 marks
  • Paper IV: GS III (Economy, Tech, Environment) – 250 marks
  • Paper V: GS IV (Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude) – 250 marks
  • Paper VI: Optional Subject Paper I – 250 marks
  • Paper VII: Optional Subject Paper II – 250 marks

🧾 Optional Subjects (choose one): Sociology, Geography, History, PSIR, Anthropology, Public Administration, Philosophy, Literature (Hindi, English, etc.) and more.

  • Conducted at UPSC Bhavan, New Delhi
  • Tests confidence, communication, decision-making, ethics, and leadership
